As de la fuerza aérea alemana. Experto piloto de planeador a la edad de 20 años, voló en cientos de misiones durante la guerra civil
española. En la segunda guerra mundial lideró un escuadrón de combate en la batalla de
Inglaterra, derribando 100 aviones británicos, y llegó a ser comandante de la rama de combate de la Luftwaffe. Culpado por
Adolf Hitler y Hermann Göring por el colapso de la defensa aérea alemana contra los bombardeos angloestadounidenses, fue relevado del mando en 1945. Encarcelado por breve tiempo al final de la guerra, se convirtió más tarde en asesor de la fuerza aérea argentina y consultor de aviación en Alemania Occidental.
